Job Description

  • The Duty Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe navigational watch at sea unless otherwise relieved by the Master or a senior officer (ref. Odfjell SMM)
  • He/she shall also assist the Chief Officer with the cargo handling when in port as outlined in Vessel's Deck/Cargo Procedures and the Chief Officer’s special orders. If he/she is not in possession of a certificate “Tanker man Highest Grade”, he/she must be supervised by the Chief Officer during cargo watch. (STCW Chapter V Reg. V1/1)
  • The Duty Officer is responsible to the Master during his/her watch on the bridge and to the Chief Officer during cargo operation.
  • He/she may be appointed by the Master to perform the duties of Navigating Officer, Safety Equipment Officer, and/or Radio Operator in accordance with the Job Descriptions in this chapter.
  • He/she further has an obligation to report accidents, incidents or near misses to his superior in accordance with Odfjell’s procedures, and is responsible for making himself/herself familiar with and for following Odfjell’s Safety & Quality Management Systems.


Skills and Qualifications:


  • At least 12 months sea service as Deck officer in an Oil/Chem tanker within the last 3 years. (Former Odfjell seafarer is an advantage)
  • Above-average from previous vessel or company.
  • Officer in Charge in Navigational Watch License
  • D-3 Certificate of Competency Endorsement
  • Training certificates in Advanced Training in Chemical Tanker, Advanced Training in Oil Tanker, Basic Training in Oil and Chemical
  • Safety courses (BT/AFF/MEFA/PSCRB)
  • GMDSS training
  • ECDIS training
  • COP certificates in Advanced Training in Chemical Tanker, Advanced Training in Oil Tanker, Basic Oil and Chemical, Safety Courses
  • Valid General Operators Certificate
