Job Description

Understudy

The second officer may serve as an understudy for the first and second ranking officers on the ship.

Voyage plans

The second officer may prepare voyage plans.

Emergencies

In most cases, the second officer stays on the bridge during an emergency. They may assist the master in navigating the ship and communicating with other ships or shore authorities. They may also send distress signals and acknowledge response from other parties.

Medical duties

The second officer may be the designated medical officer onboard. They must hold a valid medical care certificate and maintain the medical locker according to regulations.

Security

The second officer may be the vessel's designated security officer. They may also assist the master and chief officer with the safety and security of the ship and all personnel onboard.

Bridge watches

The second officer may perform bridge watches at sea. They may also serve as an officer of the watch during conventional watches.

Charts and software

The second officer is responsible for the upkeep of charts and software.

Navigation

The second officer is responsible for navigation and oversees navigational procedures. They may also be the vessel's designated radio equipment overseer.

Skills and Qualifications:

AT LEAST 18 MONTHS OF EXPERIENCE AS 2ND OFFICER

WITH OR WITHOUT US VISA

HOLDING VALID DOCUMENTS
