Job Description

⬧ Replacing the Master when he is unable to perform his duties 
⬧ Ensuring safe navigation during his watch. 
⬧ Is officer in charge for ballasting/deballasting/loading and discharging of the vessel, her trim 
and stability, tank cleaning, inerting and COW. 
⬧ It is the Chief Officers’ responsibility to ensure that junior officers, TNO and deck cadets are 
involved/trained in planning, setting up cargo lines, in cargo loading, discharging, COW, 
inerting, tank cleaning and ballast operations including the portable instruments use and 
calibration. However, the Chief Officer retains overall responsibility for all the above 
operations. Training records must be kept for each junior officer and deck cadet in Personal 
Training Record Book and for TNO in each TNO’s cadet Training book which must be 
verified/ endorsed by the Chief Officer and the Master. 
⬧ Being in charge of the implementation of Ballast Water Management plan 
⬧ Is responsible for supervising the use of Ballast Water Management (Treatment) System 
⬧ Ensuring that the vessel’s draft cargo quantity and ballast quantity are recorded in the 
logbook without delay. 
⬧ Preparing loading/discharging plans.
