Job Description

 Replace the Master when he is unable to perform his duties. 
 Ensure safe navigation during his watch. 
 Be the officer in charge for ballasting/deballasting/loading and discharging of the vessel, her 
trim and stability, hold cleaning. 
 Be in charge of the implementation of Ballast Water Management plan. 
 Ensure that the vessel’s draft cargo quantity and ballast quantity are recorded in the logbook 
without delay. 
 Prepare loading/discharging plans. 
 Oversee, in co-operation with the Chief Engineer, ship’s maintenance schedule especially in 
regard to the cargo/ballast system with valves, piping, hydraulics, vent pipes, heating 
batteries with valves and steam traps. 
 Oversee the maintenance of the mooring equipment, mooring arrangements prior to arrival in 
port, conditions of mooring wires, ropes, accommodation, pilot ladder and the gangway. 
 Ensure that deck hands are efficiently employed during working hours and that adequate “on 
the job” safety standards and routines are met. 
 Prepare watch lists for port stays and sea watches. 
 Ensure that lifeboat drills & fire exercises are carried out as required & recorded in the 
logbook. 
 Ensure that sufficient number of walkie-talkies are available and in working condition. 
 Ensure that safety routines are observed in entering enclosed spaces including all tanks, holds 
and void spaces.
