The primary duties of a third mate include safely managing a navigational watch while underway between ports, according to MITAGS. The navigational watch includes the quartermaster who steers the ship and the deck crew that, while the ship is en route, performs maintenance on deck in preparation for arrival at port. The third mate ensures the ship doesn't collide with anything, and discerns the ship's position and course using compasses and electronic and manual navigation systems. Third mates give orders to the helmsman only when necessary to maintain the ship's course. They notify the captain when anything out of the ordinary occurs, when course changes are necessary or when the ship approaches port.
