The Perks of Being a Filipino Seaman

Being a Filipino seaman is a job that definitely provides benefits for the employee and his family. Aside from the benefits and support they can get from the Philippine government which was stated in Republic Act 8042 or also known as the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act of 1995.

Filipino seamen are one of the major contributors in the Philippine economy. As a matter of fact, they have been the major source of US dollar remittances in the country. To support all these, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) revealed in 2009 that the total amount of remittances from Filipino seamen sum up to about $2.501.

The salary of a seaman depends on their position in the ship. It is also relevant to his employer and the company. But approximately, a seaman’s salary can range from USD 1,000 to USD 4,500.

Seamen are also entitled to medical insurance, standby pay for senior officers and good performance bonus for officers. The employment contract of a seaman is mostly seven to eight months.

Filipino seamen are given constant seminars which of course, is beneficial to them. It just shows that they are given the chance to learn and to work on their skills.

The insurance benefit of Filipino seamen in case of death is $50,000 plus $7,000 for every surviving child not more than 21 years old and $1,000 burial assistance.

But still, high salary and awesome health insurances and benefits can never equate the lost time and moments. It is really hard for our Filipino seamen to be away for so long. Imagine waking up in the morning and sleeping at night seeing nothing but the sea! It may feel nice at first but waking up to that everyday? It can be actually boring and stressful!

We salute Filipino seamen and all OFW’s who sacrifice everything including their own happiness just to put food in their table and to give their family the best quality of life.
