14 Seafarers in Hospital after being Food Poisoned

Crew members of the Panamanian Ship Balsa 85 were food poisoned while docked at PotashCorp terminal in New Brunswick, Canada.

Balsa 85 was about to leave the port when some of its crew had fallen ill. 14 of the seafarers were brought to St. John Regional Hospital to undergo proper medical analysis.

Doctor’s initial assessment is that the seafarers suffer from ciguatera fish poisoning, caused by eating tropical fish that had consumed algae which produces toxins.

The seafarers will remain at St. John Regional Hospital for unknown period of time, depending on how their bodies will respond to the treatment. Ciguatera fish poisoning can be treated and rarely fatal, but will rely on how much of the contaminated fish were consumed.
